CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE CARE
Therapy, community, and wellness support for South Asian individuals, families, and children who were never taught how to ask for help.
You’ve been everyone’s rock because you were taught not to fall.
Cycles that don’t shift, even after doing everything “right.”
A life that looks successful but feels heavy inside.
Support should meet the whole story — not just the parts that function.
What jiva is
In Sanskrit, JiVA (जीव) generally means “soul,” “life,” or “living being”
JiVA means life. And we believe every life deserves to be held with compassion, culture, and care.
JiVA Mental Health is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit initiative transforming how South Asian communities understand, access, and experience mental health care. Born from a deep recognition of the stigma, shame, and generational trauma many carry, JiVA was created to meet our community where we are—with compassion, culture, and clarity.

SERVICES
Too Few Get Help
Only 22% of Asian Americans with a mental health condition receive treatment. South Asians represent an even smaller fraction.
Stigma Still Hurts
Stigma, shame, and lack of culturally attuned care are the top reasons South Asians don’t reach out for help.
Culturally Matched Care
In 2023, less than 1% of certified postpartum mental health providers in the U.S. identified as South Asian.
Silence Creates Struggle
Language barriers, cultural guilt, and fear of family judgment keep many from seeking therapy, even when they’re struggling in silence.
HOW IT WORKS
CLIENT STORIES
Names and images have been changed to protect the client’s identity
When I began therapy with JiVA, I didn't realize how much of my pain was connected to my family's past. The stories of struggle and survival I grew up hearing weren't just history which I categorized as, they were alive in me still, affecting my relationships and sense of self. I didn’t realize this till I started therapy with JiVA. Therapy has helped me see the connections and start the process of untangling my own identity from the trauma of previous generations.
Jiva taught me how to establish boundaries while respecting my family and honoring my own needs. Instagram taught me to “just say no” and I lost a relationship because of that. Boundaries are different when you are brown. With the space and safety to explore my culture and identity, I realized that I may identify as queer. JiVA empowered me to heal, grow, and truly understand myself.
With JiVA’s support, I joined a South Asian men’s group and found a safe space where I could express my emotions. In our community men don’t talk emotions and I finally found a group that creates space for that. With the therapy, I was able to reconnect with my self-worth and not be embarrassed about being vulnerable. More men need to join JiVA’s group and do therapy to learn emotions are okay for men.

We’ve answered some common questions to help you feel more confident about taking the first step.
If you’re South Asian in California and carrying stress, pressure, or emotional weight that hasn’t had space to land, JiVA was built for you. We understand culture, family dynamics, and the cost of always being “strong.”
Many of our clients say the same thing. JiVA therapists work through a cultural lens, addressing family roles, expectations, and unspoken dynamics that often get missed in traditional therapy.
That's exactly what our free 15-minute consult is for. We'll talk through what you're experiencing, what you're looking for, and whether our approach feels like the right match. If it's not, we'll help you find someone who is.
If you’re here, it means part of you is ready for something different. You deserve therapy that actually honors who you are, where you come from, and what you’re carrying. Let’s take the first step together.
